Oyo government confirms 5 cases of Lassa fever, one death

The Oyo State Government has confirmed five cases of Lassa fever outbreak with one death in the state.

State Health Commissioner, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, disclosed this at a press conference held in Ibadan on Friday.

Ajetunmobi however assured the people of the state of the government’s quick response measures to contain the spread and protect public health.

The commissioner said the confirmed cases are currently being managed at the Infectious Diseases Center (IDC), Olodo, and University College Hospital (UCH).

According to him, special clinical care and containment protocols are being implemented in the isolation unit, as the state government immediately activates its emergency response framework.

He said the government initiated coordinated multi-sectoral interventions in line with the Nigerian Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) national guidelines and World Health Organization (WHO) global best practices.

The Commissioner commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his decisive leadership and unwavering commitment to the health and welfare of citizens.

According to him, the governor’s timely approval and disbursement of emergency funds facilitated the rapid operationalization of the emergency response structure.

Ajetunmobi outlined the key interventions that have been implemented, including the activation of the Incident Management System (IMS) and Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

He also mentioned the formation of a multisector response team consisting of the health, environment, agriculture and information sectors.

He further noted that a comprehensive Incident Action Plan has been developed and implemented along with intensive surveillance, including active case searches and monitoring of more than 200 identified contacts.

“Other steps include the implementation of the Surveillance, Management and Outbreak Response Analysis System (SORMAS) for real-time data management, operationalization of isolation centers, and prepositioning of Ribavirin and other important commodities.

“In addition, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures have been strengthened, including the provision and use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

“Safe and dignified burial protocols are also being implemented in collaboration with environmental health authorities,” the commissioner said.
