Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Monday, handed over the baton of office to the newly crowned Elempe Tapa, Oba Titiloye Oyekanmi, during a ceremony held at the Elempale Community Senior High School in the city.
Representing the governor, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal emphasized the important role of Elempe in fostering unity, peace and progress in the society. He commended the careful selection process that led to the ascension of Oba Oyekanmi to the throne, hailing it as a testament to the people’s commitment to tradition, transparency and the rule of law.
Governor Makinde, speaking directly to the new king, urged Oba Oyekanmi to work closely with the state government to address critical local issues such as security and economic development. “I charge you, Oba Oyekanmi, to embrace the responsibilities that come with this prestigious position,” Makinde said. “Work with us to address the pressing needs of the people, including education, healthcare, security and economic development.”

Highlighting ongoing challenges such as kidnapping, banditry and land disputes in the area, Makinde called for Elempe’s partnership in combating these issues. He advised the new ruler, saying, “Leadership is a sacred trust that demands wisdom, compassion and integrity. Your tenure must embody grace, humility and unwavering commitment to the welfare of all.”
Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to the community for their support during the selection process, emphasizing the importance of upholding the traditional values and heritage of the Elempe lineage. “Today marks a significant milestone for Tapa and for all who cherish our timeless customs and traditions,” he concluded.
In response, Oba Oyekanmi expressed gratitude to God and Governor Makinde for the opportunity. “Today’s event is unprecedented in our community,” he said, acknowledging the governor’s dedication to preserving local customs and values. He pledged to lead Tapa with a focus on development, peace and prosperity, promising, “Under my leadership, Tapa Land will experience tremendous growth and harmony, guided by divine principles.”
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, described the event as a historic moment for Tapa, marking the transition to a new era under the leadership of their revered king.
