Oyo teachers start strike over kidnapping

Teachers in public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike to protest against the abduction of students in three schools in Orire Local Government Area of ​​the state.

Gunmen on May 15 attacked Community Grammar School, LA Primary School, in Ahoro-Esinele and Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, near Ogbomoso, where pupils and teachers were kidnapped.

They also killed two people in the attack.

Following the incident, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, directed teachers in the state to go on indefinite strike from Monday.

Journalists visiting schools across the state noticed full compliance with the directive.

Some of the schools visited included Anglican Middle School, Orita-Mefa; St. Mary’s High School St. Mary’s Grammar School Louis, Mokola; Oba Akinbiyi Model School; and St. Mary’s School Brigid, Mokola.

At the school, many students who arrived at the facility at 7:45 a.m. were turned back and asked to go home.

However, candidates sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and teachers assigned to supervisory duties are permitted to enter the school premises.
