PDP slams Tinubu’s silence on nationwide protests

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his failure to address the nation amid widespread protests across the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Honourable Debo Ologunagba, demanded that President Tinubu urgently address pressing issues such as reducing oil prices, stabilising the Naira and ensuring food security.

The PDP expressed concern that the President’s silence was increasing public concern and perpetuating the perception that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government was insensitive to the plight of citizens.

The party criticized reported brutality by security forces against unarmed protesters and called for an immediate end to the violence.

The PDP urged President Tinubu to reassure citizens on key issues, including reducing the price of petrol to N200 per litre, recovering stolen funds and cutting the cost of governance.

The party also demanded a thorough investigation into the reported killings of unarmed protesters and stressed the need for security agencies to maintain professionalism in their duties.

The statement read, “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemns President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his failure to address the nation despite the crippling nationwide protests by Nigerians.

“The PDP demands that President Tinubu immediately communicate to Nigerians urgent measures to reduce the price of petroleum products, stem the fall of the Naira and ensure prompt food supply among other critical issues so as to overhaul the productive sector, stimulate employment and restore stability in governance.

“Our party expresses concern that President Tinubu’s silence sends a very dangerous signal and increases public concern about the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The APC government is insensitive to the feelings of citizens and the overall sorry state of the country.

“It is indeed very concerning if President Tinubu can only remain silent while the people take to the streets demanding good governance, protection, security and welfare, which are the main goals of the government.

“The world watched in horror as APC-controlled security forces attacked, shot and killed unarmed protesters, while thugs allegedly mobilized by the APC also unleashed violence on innocent Nigerians.

“Our party urges President Tinubu not to remain silent any longer, to immediately deliver a state address and convince the people about the various issues that are weighing on their minds, especially the reduction in fuel and food prices.

“Our party insists that with agile, transparent and innovative management of resources, economic potential, comparative advantages and refining capacity, petrol should not be sold for more than N200 per litre in Nigeria, especially with strategic investment in gas production.

“President Tinubu should also immediately begin the process of recovering the over N50 trillion reportedly stolen by APC leaders, reduce tariffs on essential goods, cut the cost of governance, review all luxury items in his administration, and channel the recovered funds to programs that will directly impact the welfare of Nigerians.

“Furthermore, while calling for a thorough investigation into the reported killings of unarmed Nigerians by some unscrupulous security operatives, the PDP urges the security agencies to ensure a high level of professionalism in their duties to provide security and protection to citizens.”

The statement came as protests continue to rock the country, with citizens demanding good governance, protection, security and welfare. The PDP’s call for action has put pressure on President Tinubu to respond to the growing unrest.
