The presidential candidate of the Labor Party (LP), Peter Obi, has explained his absence of the burial of the former President of Muhammadu Buhari, who connected him with logistics constraints outside of his control.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, Obi said he intended to travel to Daura, the state of Katsina, on Tuesday to attend the Ritus of the Fund of the President of the President of the President but could not do it because of unexpected situations.
“Yesterday morning, after a condolence visit to the family of the late Awujale from Ijebuland in Ijebu Ode, the State of Ogun, I tried to be in Daura, the state of Katsina, to attend the funeral of our President Muhammadu Buhari, but all my efforts proved to fail due to logistics challenges outside of my control,”
Former Governor of the State Anambra noted that he immediately told a member of the Buhari family about his inability to attend the funeral. “He gracefully replied that it was quite understood, and I promised to come today,” Obi added.
His absence from the burial of the state has attracted criticism from several places. However, Obi stated that he fulfilled his promise by visiting Daura on Wednesday, where he joined the Vice President of Kashim Shettima, former Vice President of Atiku Abubakar, President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, Governor of Dikko Radda from the state of Katsina held.
Obi was accompanied by Senator Ireeti Kingibe, Senator Okey Ezea, and the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Tanko Yunusa.

Reflecting on a private meeting with Buhari during the 2022 Presidential Campaign Season, Obi recalled: “I remember clearly meeting with President Buhari in 2022 during my campaign. He said to me: ‘Peter, you don’t seem to be anywhere and loved by people. The moment was with me, especially since his death. “
Obi concluded his statement by giving prayers to the late President and Awujale from Ijebuland who had just died.
“May the Almighty God, who has called our final president and Awujale Ijebuland to rest eternal, give them peace and entertain their families and indeed our beloved nation. Hopefully their inheritance and their dignity will never be forgotten,” he said.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 at London Hospital. His body arrived at Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport in Katsina, where he was received by the state delegation. He was laid in his hometown in Daura on Tuesday, July 15, at 17:50, in a solemn ceremony attended by the President of Bola Tinubu, Vice President Shethtima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Yemi Osinbajo, President of the Akpabio Senate, and other high -ranking officials.
Buhari remains one of the most prominent Nigerian political figures, after serving as the head of the country from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratic elected president from 2015 to 2023, making him the longest leader serving in the country.
