Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the recent invitation of Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero by the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement on Thursday, Obi stressed the sensitivity of the situation, given Ajaero’s important role as the country’s labor leader.
Obi warned that due process must be followed, stressing that the allegations against Ajaero were serious but it was unclear whether they related to his personal conduct or his responsibilities as NLC leader.
He urged extreme caution, warned against autocratic methods to silence workers, and called on authorities to strictly adhere to the rule of law and evidence-based procedures.

“The Labour Party must hold fast to its power and authority to maintain order and democratic sanity,” Obi said, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law in dealing with the issue.
“Therefore, extreme caution must be exercised in the way this issue is handled. It is not surprising that the government will try autocratic methods to view workers as a potential opposition force.”
The former governor further called on authorities to strictly adhere to the rule of law and evidence-based procedures in handling the matter.
“Invitations like the one in Ajaero are welcome. However, the rule of law and the law of evidence must be followed. The Labour Party must hold fast to its power and authority to maintain order and the sanity of democracy,” Obi said.
The invitation caused anxiety, and Obi’s intervention highlighted the need for careful handling to avoid escalating tensions between workers and the government.
