President Ghana urged Ecowas to dialogue with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger

President Ghana, John Mahama, on Thursday called for a sustainable dialogue between the economic communities of West African countries (Ecowas), Burkina Faso, Mali, and the Republic of Niger.

Mahama made this call during an honorary visit to the President of the Tinubu Bola in the State Building in Abuja.

The visit was the first leader of Ghana to Nigeria since his inauguration on January 7.

Mahama said he came to thank the honor given to him during his inauguration and to tell Tinubu on his visit to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Three countries left the sub-regional body in 2024.

This followed Ecowas’s decision to impose sanctions on the Republic of Niger in responding to the August 2023 coup in the state that was locked up in land.

He said: “As chairman of Ecowas, it is my duty to tell him about some of the worries raised during the visit so that we can continue dialogue with these countries.

“We just need to find a way to keep the conversation running.”

Tinubu praised Mahama’s efforts to strengthen the relationship between Ecowas and Sahel countries.

He said that if left unchecked, security challenges in the Sahel region could hamper economic opportunities.

President Tinubu, therefore, emphasized the need for a sustainable dialogue to ensure the security and prosperity of countries in the sub-region.
