President Tinubu appoints new directors general for NIA, DSS

President Bola Tinubu has appointed new Director-Generals for Nigeria’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of State Services (DSS), signaling a change in leadership for these vital security agencies.

This was revealed in a statement on Monday afternoon by the President’s Special Advisor for Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.

Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed has been appointed as the new Director-General of the NIA. With a distinguished career in the foreign service, Ambassador Mohammed brings a wealth of experience to the role. Having joined the NIA in 1995, he has held various key positions, including Director and Head of Nigeria’s Mission to Libya. A graduate of Bayero University, Kano, Ambassador Mohammed has also served in North Korea, Pakistan and Sudan, as well as at State House in Abuja, Ngalele said in the statement.

President Tinubu, according to the statement, expressed confidence in Ambassador Mohammed’s ability to lead the NIA effectively.

“Ambassador Mohammed’s extensive experience and proven track record make him well-suited to lead the NIA during this crucial period,” President Tinubu said. “I am confident that under his leadership, the agency will continue to excel in safeguarding our national interests.”

The new Director-General of DSS, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, replaces the outgoing chief after a distinguished career in the agency. Rising through the ranks to his current position as Assistant Director-General, Mr. Ajayi previously served as State Director in Bauchi, Enugu, Bayelsa, Rivers and Kogi.

“Mr. Ajayi’s promotion to the DSS ranks demonstrates his deep understanding of our internal security dynamics,” President Tinubu said. “I hope he will leverage his vast experience to enhance the effectiveness of the agency in addressing the country’s security challenges.”

The appointments came after the resignation of the previous Director Generals of NIA and DSS.

In light of these changes, President Tinubu has tasked the new leaders to reposition their respective agencies to better address Nigeria’s security issues. He stressed the importance of collaboration with other security agencies and alignment with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

“I urge Ambassador Mohammed and Mr. Ajayi to use their expertise to strengthen our security apparatus,” President Tinubu added. “Their leadership will be critical in advancing our efforts to safeguard national security and public safety.”

As a form of appreciation, President Tinubu also expressed his gratitude to the Director Generals whose terms will end. “I would like to thank them for their dedication to the country and wish them the best in the future,” he said.
