Nigeria’s military announced Monday that people who raise Russian flags during ongoing nationwide protests are committing treason and will be βprosecuted.β
Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa made the remarks after a National Security Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, stressing that the act was βtotally unacceptableβ and would amount to a treasonable offence.
On August 3, 2024, during a protest against the high cost of living, some demonstrators in Kano State were seen waving Russian flags. Viral photos and videos showed the demonstrators chanting in Hausa, βWe donβt want bad governance.β Similar scenes were reported on Monday in Kaduna, where demonstrators were also seen waving Russian flags and chanting, βWelcome, Russia; Welcome, Russia.β
Russia, an Eastern power currently embroiled in tensions with the West, has been accused of influencing several unconstitutional changes of government in West African countries such as Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.

General Musa said, βFor those who are flying the flags, and if you see a lot of flags, those are children who are being encouraged to do so. We are following up with those who are sponsoring it. They are encouraging it because, you know, the pamphlets are also being made. We have identified those areas, and we will take serious action against them.β
βThe President was clear in his instructions that we should not accept anyone who wants to disturb the peace and tranquility of Nigeria,β Musa added.
βWe gave a stern warning, and the President also said that we must say this: We will not accept anyone, any individual who flies a foreign flag in Nigeriaβ¦ So, no one should allow himself to be taken advantage of by any individual.β
