The Rivers State House of Representatives, under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Governor Siminialayi Fubara to resubmit the 2024 budget to the House.
The state assembly faction allied to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, took this stance during its session held at an undisclosed location in Port Harcourt on Monday.
It would be recalled that last week, the Court of Appeal in Abuja quashed the order of the Rivers State High Court that had barred Amaewhule and 24 other legislators from functioning as lawmakers.
Earlier, Governor Fubara had presented a bill on the budget of about N800 billion for the 2024 financial year to the assembly under the leadership of Edison Ehie, before Ehie resigned to become the governor’s Chief of Staff.
Ehie and other legislators who supported Fubara discussed the bill, passed it, and then had it signed into law by the governor.

However, amid the state crisis, President Bola Tinubu stepped in and, in an eight-point resolution, directed Governor Fubara to resubmit the passed 2024 budget to the Amaewhule-led assembly.
During Monday’s plenary session chaired by Amaewhule, the assembly issued an ultimatum following a resolution reached by members present. The proposal was initiated by Dumped Mao, the House Committee Chairman and Deputy Speaker.
The Assembly further decided to communicate this decision to Governor Fubara through an official letter.
In a parallel development, the assembly loyal to Governor Fubara, led by Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, held a separate session where they screened and confirmed a nominee for commissioner in preparation for the possible swearing-in.
The divisions continue amid legal battles, with Oko-Jumbo and other pro-Fubara lawmakers now heading to the Supreme Court over the Rivers State crisis.
