The Supreme Court has canceled the decision of the appeal court which recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairperson of the Labor Party (LP), marked a significant change in the ongoing legal battle over party leadership.
In a unanimous decision, the panel of five members from the High Court decided that the appeal court in Abuja did not have a jurisdiction to declare Abure as the national chairman of the Labor Party. The panel emphasized that the problem faced involved the internal leadership of the party, a problem where the court did not have jurisdiction.
The Supreme Court’s decision effectively allowed the appeal submitted by Senator Nenadi Usman and other prosecutors, considered him meritorious. At the same time, he rejected the cross comparison submitted by the Abure faction from the Labor Party, stating it without achievement.

This latest decision followed the verdict in January by the appeal court in Abuja, which had strengthened Abure’s position as chairman of the Labor Party. The panel of three members from the appeal court, led by judge Hamma Barka, reiterated in his decision that Abure’s status as a national chairman remained valid, because the decision made on November 13, 2024, had not been canceled by a higher court.
In the decision, the appeal court has clarified that disputes about the leadership of the labor party are outside the scope of the judicial intervention, stating that such things cannot be justified.
The court also decided that every action taken outside of its jurisdiction was null and void, making a previous federal high court decision delivered by judge Emeka Nwite on October 8, 2024, was not effective.
