The famous political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, has declared his willingness to face legal proceedings on his plan proposed to declare a shadow government, saying that he will arrive in Nigeria on June 12 and will go directly to the residence of the late Mko Abiola.
On Friday, in a declaration, Utomi said that a group of people is mobilizing 500 lawyers to defend him in the case presented against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The DSS had presented a case against Utomi at the High Federal Court of Abuja, accusing him of attempting to destabilize the country through the proposed institution of a shadow government. The cause, marked with FHC/Abj/CS/937/2025 and presented on May 13 by Akinlu Kehinde (San), claims that Utomi’s plan is a threat to the constitutional order of Nigeria.
Reacting to development through an assignment on his X report, the former presidential candidate expressed gratitude for the solidarity show from the Nigerians, saying that the attempt to criminalize the civic commitment reports the decline of democracy in the country.
“I am heartened by the messages of solidarity from all over Nigeria on this dark activity of chasing shadows of shade cabinets. It reminds me of the Nigeria I knew,” wrote Utomi.
He added: “I want to thank everyone. He is energizing. Some want to put together 500 lawyers to defend me against the DSS.
“It was asked as a question: that’s how democracy dies in Nigeria? The answer is affirmative. This is how democracy died in Nigeria, when citizens cannot organize themselves to ask questions to their agents.
“Under Abacha, we brought together the Nigerians in St. Leo to Ikeja for a conference on the future of Nigeria. I chaired the planning, which came out of the Catholic secretariat below then Br. Kukah and Ehusani. Now, to shade democracy, hell arrives.”
Declaring his will to submit to the arrest, Utomi said: “Where are they? I will arrive on June 12 and I will head towards the residence of Abiola. My hands are prepared for the handcuffs and if the treatment aquino da Marcos – a bullet at the airport – is preferred, I willingly undergo as an lamb led to the massacre.
“What is certain is that Tinubu will not escape the same fate. It may have been in London when I faced the killers under Abacha and was the supplier of the head Enahoro and Nadeco abroad of the news of my position on issues of the struggle. But in the end we all go to the man’s way.”
Utomi also invoked the memory of the global icons of civil resistance, including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and St. Thomas More.
“I raise the meaning of being for what remains of my time on this phase,” he said.
Quoting the astronomer Carl Sagan, Utomi reflected on the fragility of life and power: “A grain of dust, the seat of tyrants who have threatened rivers of blood; and also for all those we have loved. I am encouraged to sing: freedom now. If we die, we die.”
