Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal was appointed UN Goodwill Ambassador on the opening day of the World Cup

The hugely talented Spanish team is one of the main favorites to win the event and its teenage superstar, Lamine Yamal, promises to be one of the standout players in the tournament.

On Thursday, ahead of the first match between Mexico and South Africa, the UN children’s agency (UNICEF) announced That Yamal has become the youngest Goodwill Ambassadorwith a focus on children’s right to play and supporting those living in humanitarian emergencies, such as conflict or natural disasters.

Children’s rights are something close to the Barcelona midfielder’s heart. On World Children’s Day 2024, as part of a UNICEF campaign, he wrote a heartfelt letter to his little brother to express his wishes for children everywhere.

Last year, he handed over his social media accounts to a nine-year-old girl from Equatorial Guinea – his mother’s home country – allows him to share with the world his everyday life experiences, far from the luxury of Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium.

Yamal’s appointment was announced on International Play Daymarked annually on June 11. UNICEF revealed that more than 90 million children under the age of five do not have toys such as store-bought toys, household items, or other simple resources for playing at home.while 80 million children aged two to four years do not play with their parents or caregivers at home.

Score goals (sustainable development).

Ahead of the event, the UN released a Study shows how football can help change lives for the better and drive progress towards a fairer world.

This report examines the growing impact of Football for Goals initiative, which brings together clubs, associations, business and civil society to support sustainable development.

The UN initiative encourages organizations in the world of football to align their activities with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a blueprint to end poverty, reduce inequality and build a better future for everyone by 2030.

Reaching those who need it most

Data collected from participating organizations shows that football-based projects bring change to disadvantaged communities.

Many initiatives focus on reducing disparities, increasing access to education and health services, and supporting partnerships that bring communities together. Examples include creating safe spaces for young people, empowering women and girls, and supporting community well-being.

By capitalizing on the popularity of soccer, organizations can engage people who might otherwise be difficult to reach, turning enthusiasm for the sport into positive action.

With only a few years left to achieve the SDGs, this report underscores the need for innovative approaches that deliver results on the ground. Football, the report says, offers a unique opportunity to unite communities and drive progress through practical and inspiring ways.
