Sports Minister laments Nigerian team’s disappointing performance at Olympics

Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh lamented the disappointing performance of Team Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Olympics, which started on July 26, will conclude today (Sunday) in the French capital.

Speaking before the closing ceremony of the Olympics, the Minister said there would be closer scrutiny of the constitution governing Nigeria’s sports federations.

The Nigerian team failed to win a single medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics despite “adequate support” and preparations by the Ministry.

Senator Enoh said, “We as the Ministry have made every effort to adequately prepare athletes and provide financial support, but unfortunately the achievements have not resulted in podium finishes.”

He continued, “When we return home, we must do everything we can to prevent another Paris disaster from happening and if this requires a review of how people are chosen to lead our sports federations, then so be it.”

Stressing the importance of the upcoming federation elections, Senator Enoh noted, “I know that elections for the Federation will be held soon and this will be the perfect platform to elect only those who have something to offer to lead the various sports.”

Reflecting on the complexities of these elections, he added, “I am aware that the Sports Federation Elections in Nigeria are even more difficult than our National Elections and you will begin to ask yourself why that is.”

The Minister concluded, “So for me as a Minister, it is important for me to oversee the Elections where only the best people will lead the various Federations and I also understand that in some Federations, their constitutions need to be reviewed to make them better.”

Nigeria failed to win any medals at the Olympics, its worst performance in recent times.
