New Super Eagles assistant coach Daniel Ogunmodede says he is excited with the friendly atmosphere in the team camp and believes he is already seeing signs of winning in the team.
Sports247.ng reports that Ogunmodede stated the same during his first interview since the Eagles camp in Uyo, ahead of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic.
The young tactician, who also remains the head coach of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) runners-up Remo Stars of Ikenne, added that he was happy with the warm reception he received upon his arrival at the national team camp.
While predicting that they will also win their next match, which will be away to Rwanda in Kigali, Ogunmodede chimed in saying that he is not too young to be in the national team coaching staff.
Ogunmodede began by saying: “I am over 40 years old but we have top coaches abroad who are 32 years old and are doing well with their national teams.
“The German coach is just over 30 years old. That is why I think this is the right and best time for me to have this experience.
“It will be a good adventure for me, with good results in mind and fulfilling my duty with the utmost dedication.”
He went on to give a strong hint that there will be no conflict between him and other new members of the technical team, which is led by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen as interim coach.
The chief assured: “My function and my roles are clearly established, which I will do to the best of my ability and enjoy the privilege of being here.
“At first I felt a little sick at home, but thanks to the friendly atmosphere I was able to adapt to the camp.
“The coach, support staff, NFF officials and even the players gave me a warm welcome. NFF officials always come to check on us.
“This has really helped me adapt quicker… without taking away from the fact that I will still miss everyone at my club.”
Ogunmodede concluded with his predictions for the Eagles’ first two matches in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers – against Benin Republic in Uyo this Saturday and away to Rwanda on Tuesday.
“I hope we win both qualifiers, because they are very important for our qualification for the next Nations Cup,” the coach admitted in a soft tone.
Sports247.ng further reports that Ogunmodede will work as Eguavoen’s assistant for both matches alongside another rookie, Fidelis Ilechukwu, who led Enugu-based Rangers International FC to first place in the NPFL last season.
