Super Eagles will face Rohr-coached Benin in their opening match of AFCONQ 2025

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face Benin Republic in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series.

Ripples Nigeria reported last week that the Nigerian senior football team had been drawn in Group D of the qualifiers alongside Benin, Libya and Rwanda.

Nigeria will begin their bid to secure a place in the tournament with a home game against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, who are coached by former Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr.

This meeting will take place in September 2024, and the second match day will be held at Amahoro Stadium, Kigali for the match against Rwanda.

The next rounds will take place in October and November 2024, with the top two teams in each group qualifying for a competition to be hosted by Morocco.

Recall that Benin Republic beat the Super Eagles 2-1 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match last month.

The defeat leaves the Super Eagles in a tough spot as the race for the 2026 North American finals continues next year.

Nigeria will face Rwanda in March before preparing for their remaining five matches, hoping to finish top of the Group to gain automatic qualification for the world championship.
