The group condemns the police assault in Sowore, requires its liberation – Thage

The solidarity network of workers and youth has condemned the continuous illegal possession and the alleged assault of the prominent activist Omoyel Sowore by the Police Forces of Nigeria, asking for his immediate release and asking for responsibility from the highest levels of application of the law.

The secretary solidarity network, workers and young people, companion Iortyom Moses, said Sowore, who voluntarily honored a police invitation on Wednesday 6 August 2025, has since been subjected to which sources they describe how serious physical assaults by at least eight police officers of the Department of Intelligence of the Force (FID) in Abuja. According to credible relationships, the attack occurred at about 6:00 when a team led by a superintendent chief of the police stormed his detention cell.

“They broke their right hand,” confirmed a source close to the activist. “He refused to be taken away without his clothes, and that’s then that they launched themselves on him.”

The activist was subsequently transferred forcefully to a not disclosed position, raising serious concerns about his safety and well -being, he said.

“We have identified multiple procedural and constitutional infringements in the case of Sowore:

1. Conflict of interest: the police act as a complaint and investigator, violating the principles of natural justice

2. Questionable petitions: two petitions were presented by DCP Akin Fakorede, including a presumed falsification and another that claims the “criminal defamation” of Bukola Yemisi Kuti (promoted to ACP in controversial circumstances)

3. Passport seizure: at the beginning of this year, the authorities seized Sowore’s international passport through judicial proceedings

According to Moses, this latest accident represents an escalation in what seems to be a systematic campaign of harassment against Sowore for his defense work. The activist has constantly against the injustice that affects the police officers and the wider Nigerian audience, making him a goal for those who try to silence dissent.

He said that the group requires Sowore must be issued unconditionally or formally accused in court within the constitutional times and immediately granted access to an adequate medical care for injuries suffered during the alleged assault

“We ask for an independent survey on the conduct of the officers involved in the assault and argue that the police inspector must be held responsible for these violations of human rights and the right trial.

β€œWe invoke all the Nigerians who appreciate justice and the constitutional rights of being with Sowore during this critical period. The Nigerian people, for whom Sowore has constantly supported, must not remain silent in the face of this clear abuse of power.

β€œIf the Nigerian police forces are unable to immediately release Omoyel Sowore, we will furnish the Nigerians to take to the streets in peaceful protest against the police inspector.

“In addition, we ask for the immediate removal of the police general inspector if it continues to abuse its public load and violate the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens,” said Moses.
