The NNPP faction distanced itself from the opposition coalition meeting

A faction of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) led by Dr. Agbo Major has distanced himself from the resolution reached at the summit of opposition political parties held in Ibadan, Oyo State, last Saturday.

Major, who spoke at a press conference on Monday in Abuja, said his party was not represented or officially involved in the coalition meeting.

He emphasized that the presence of several expelled party members at the meeting should not be misinterpreted as NNPP participation.

He said: “The NNPP, as a registered political party, wishes to distance itself from the recently held summit of opposition parties in Ibadan.

“None of our major party leaders attended the meeting, nor was the party represented in any official capacity.”

He warned the coalition leadership against allowing individuals he described as frauds to use his party’s name for the sake of relevance or political gain.

Major also revealed that the party’s electronic membership registration, which was launched two weeks ago, had recorded significant progress nationally.

According to him, the party has initiated a comprehensive review of the implementation involving key stakeholders, including candidates, zonal and state chairmen, to improve efficiency and transparency.

“Our goal remains to build credible, technology-based political institutions that reflect the aspirations of the Nigerian people,” the chairman said.

Major said his party recently met with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and requested that the recognized National Working Committee (NWC) be uploaded to its official portal in line with existing court decisions.

He warned that INEC’s failure to comply with the court order would force the party to join calls for the removal of its chairman in the interest of democracy.

The NNPP faction also condemned what it called impersonation and misrepresentation in the alleged letter to INEC by Dr. Ahmed Ajuji, who he claims is no longer a member of the party.

Major said that court decisions, including those issued by courts in Abia, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Court of Appeal in Owerri, had confirmed the removal of several former members, including former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others associated with the Kwankwassiya group.

He emphasized that the decision remains legal and binding, and said that his party will not hesitate to take legal action against individuals who declare themselves to be members or representatives of the NNPP.

He said the party had submitted its schedule of activities for the 2027 elections to INEC and urged the commission to enforce all relevant court decisions without delay.

Major reiterated his party’s commitment to internal democracy, the rule of law and credible leadership ahead of the next election.

A coalition of opposition parties, at the end of a summit in Ibadan at the weekend, decided to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the coalition said the proposed consensus candidate would be mutually agreed upon and supported by the participating opposition parties.

A faction in the Accord Party on Sunday distanced the party from the agreement reached at the meeting.
