The PDP, ADC and other factions may nominate one candidate in the 2027 presidential election

Leaders of several opposition political parties in the country have decided to collectively field one candidate to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential elections.

The parties stated this in a communiqué issued at the end of the National Summit of Opposition Political Parties held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The opposition figures in a communiqué marked ‘Ibadan Declaration and signed by the Chairmen of the participating Opposition Parties stated that “we will work to nominate one Presidential Candidate for the 2027 elections, which must be agreed to and supported by all participating opposition parties to save our country and its long-suffering people”.

The summit was attended by political opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Also present included Peter Obi, David Mark, Professor Jerry Gana, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party faction, Saminu Turaki, and political strategist Pat Utomi.

The communiqué further stated: “The participating Opposition Parties in Nigeria, having undertaken extensive deliberations regarding the collective threats we face and the existential challenges our country faces under the grip of the oppressive and anti-democratic All Progressives Congress (APC) and bearing in mind the need for urgent collective action to save our nation and the fate of over 200 million compatriots, hereby resolve as follows:

“That we will reject all machinations of the APC to impose a one-party state on Nigeria and fight for the survival of multi-party democracy in our country.

“That despite attacks and maneuvers from the ruling party, the APC will appoint President Bola Tinubu as its sole Presidential candidate in 2027; we will field candidates and contest the 2027 Presidential election and other elections.

“That the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, who has shown bias and partiality in favor of the ruling APC, should not hold the 2027 elections because the Nigerian people have lost confidence in him and his capacity to guarantee the neutrality necessary to hold free, fair, transparent and credible elections. His continued tenure in office is highly irritating and capable of triggering a widespread crisis in our country.

“That the National Assembly must immediately review the 2026 Election Law to remove all articles that threaten the sanctity and integrity of elections and conflict with constitutional provisions.

“That all prominent politicians detained or harassed for bailable offenses will be immediately released and allowed to exercise their fundamental rights of participation and inclusivity as Nigerian citizens.

“That we consider the recent guidelines issued by INEC as an obstacle, deliberately designed to impose conditions and deadlines on opposition parties. We therefore demand that INEC extends the deadline for the primaries to the end of July 2026”.
