The President of Chakwera Malawi acknowledged defeat ahead of the final election results

President Malawi Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday acknowledged the defeat in the country’s presidential election, less than two hours before the official announcement of the results.

The partial Turlies released by the Election Commission indicates the leader who rules for former President Peter Mutharika, who seems to be reclaiming power after the 9 September poll.

In a speech broadcast on television, Chakwera, 70, acknowledged the results, saying his decision was made “because he respects your will as a citizen and because he respects the constitution.” He further promised to ensure “peaceful transfer of power.”

Supporters of Mutharika, 85, erupted in the celebration at the national product center as the news spread concession. The official declaration of the winner is expected on Wednesday.

The election marks the fourth direct contest between Mutharika and Chakwera. Mutharika had previously ensured victory in 2014 and 2019, although the last was canceled by the Malawi Constitutional Court due to widespread deviations, including damaging the results sheet. Chakwera continued to win again 2020.

Analysts have anticipated a difficult election campaign for chakwera, quoting an increase in economic challenges. Malawi has been beaten by climate -related disasters, including typhoons that destroy and regional drought, which have paralyzed agricultural output and deepening poverty.

The country has experienced inflation above 20 percent for more than three years. According to the estimated World Bank, almost three quarters of Malawi survived with less than $ 3 a day, while about half of the population did not have enough daily calories for adequate nutrition.
