At the Al-Rantisi Hospital in Gaza City, Maryam Dawas who was nine years old wasting.

Warning: This shows people who suffer from malnutrition that you might find troublesome

His malnutrications are very severe, he can no longer eat. His small ribs protruded out of his chest. His upper arm is thinner than his wrist.

Every blink looks like a struggle. His eyes were tired and sad. “What is your dream now?” A family friend who filmed asked him. “To return to me,” he whispered back.

Maryam Dawas used to weigh 25kg (9LB 3). Now it weighs nine (4LB 1). That’s about the weight of a baby who has not yet reached his first birthday.

His medical record said he experienced functional diarrhea, an unspecified intestinal malabsorption and malnutrition of unspecified protein energy.

“Maryam has suffered from malnutrition since we fled from north to Rafah,” his mother explained. “Because of the hunger in the south, we are starving, but that is not worse than we face it now.”

The Maryam case is almost not unique.

Latest Report About Gaza From the UN office to coordinate humanitarian affairs (OCHA) said that nearly 13,000 new children’s acceptance for acute nutritional lacks was recorded in July.

The latest figure from the Gaza Ministry of Health is 251 killed as a result of hunger and malnutrition, including 108 children.

“I went to several hospitals last week and each of them was overwhelmed by cases of malnutrition, severe malnutrition -children, teenagers, just call it,” representatives of Ocha Gaza Olga Cherevko told me.

“And whether it is the condition or malnutrition that has existed before, the fact that in the state means that it worsens whatever conditions are above it.”

The Coordinator of Israeli Government Activities in the Region (Cogat) claimed on Tuesday that Hamas puffed out the number of people in Gaza who were dying due to malnutrition, and that most of the children who died had previous health conditions.

But that is about hunger. This is looking for those who are vulnerable first and then resolved, carrying themselves with the weak and poor, worsening their problems.

In his book Poverty and Famines, the economist winning the Nobel Prize Amartya Sen wrote as the opening sentence: “Hunger is the characteristics of some people who do not have enough food to be eaten. This is not a characteristic of there is not enough food to eat.”

Helps not achieve the weakest and vulnerable

Now there is a drop of help to enter Gaza, but to those who are strong enough to fight for it.

Sucked from the point of assistance and sold in the black market, it reached some people who still have money to pay for it.

That is not a weak, vulnerable and poor, even though it illustrates the majority of 2.1 million Gaza residents.

According to the classification of integrated food safety phase (ICE) that measures food and hunger vulnerability, 81% of households in Gaza reported poor food consumption in July, up from 33% in April; 24% of households experienced a very severe famine in July, compared to 4% in April; And almost nine out of 10 households use “very severe coping mechanisms” to feed themselves.

The big climbing in the food vulnerability followed directly from the total Israeli blockade, which began on March 2 and ended on May 19 when Israel began the start of limited food supplies.

Eleven weeks where no one came, exacerbated almost two years of war and part of the Gaza blockade that had been going on since 2007.

Britain said it was planning to evacuate children who were more injured and critical illness from Gaza “with speed”. For children like Maryam, it can’t happen immediately.

This article was updated at 5 pm on August 17 to reflect Maryam’s medical background.
