A man has been detained after a US politician and her husband were shot dead in Minnesota on Saturday, law enforcement officials said.
The authorities urged the public not to approach Vance Boelter, 57, which they said could be armed, and reportedly disguised as police officers.
Massive hunting was launched after Melissa Hortman and Mark Hortman were shot dead in their homes in the suburbs of Minneapolis in the governor Walz team called “murder with political motivated”.
The police said the same armed man who killed Hortman previously shot and injured Democratic senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in their homes nine miles away.
The authorities believe Boelter wore a mask when he disguised himself as a police officer, and also used a vehicle that resembled a troop car.
Some AK -style firearms and a list of around 70 names, including politicians and activists of abortion rights, are allegedly found inside.
The police said they responded to fire reports at Champlin Hoffmans’s house shortly after 2 am on Saturday and found them with several gunshot wounds.
They then checked at Hortmans’s house, on the outskirts of Brooklyn nearby, and saw what looked like a police car and a man dressed like an officer who left the front door.
“The person immediately fired at the officers, who exchanged shots, and the suspect retreated back to the house” and fled on foot, said Police Chief Brooklyn Park Mark Bruuley.
‘The two of us are very lucky to be alive’
Senator Hoffman was shot nine times and underwent several operations, according to text messages shared on Instagram by fellow senator Amy Klobuchar on Sunday.
The text of Yvette Hoffman added: “I took 8 and the two of us were very lucky to be alive.”
She said her husband “closer every hour to get out of the forest”.

Note shows Boelter – the father of five children – is a former political appointment who served in the same state labor development council as Hoffman.
However, it is unclear to what extent they know each other, if completely.
Hoffman, 60, was first elected in 2012 and run a consulting company called Hoffman Strategic Advisors.
Melissa Hortman, a mother of two children aged 55 years, was first elected in 2004 and became a Democratic leader of Democrats in the state legislature.
He also served as Chairman of the Minnesota Representative Council.
Mrs. Hortman uses her position to fight for the protection of abortion rights, including laws to strengthen Minnesota’s status as a safe protection for people from limited countries, who travel there to have abortion.
His work is also trying to introduce protection for services that provide abortion.
