The United States feed governors for expensive expenditure in the midst of poverty

The Embassy of the United States in Nigeria expressed a strong disapproval for the extravagant lifestyle of several governors of the Nigerian state, accusing them of having abused public funds on vanity projects while citizens continue to suffer in difficult economic conditions.

In a shared declaration on its official management of X (previously Twitter) Tuesday, the Embassy referred to an investigative relationship that exposed the way in which billions of Naira were assigned for luxurious renovation and construction projects of the house, despite the economic pain deriving from the economic reforms of President Bola Bola Tinubu.

“While the Nigerians are tightening the belts, the same cannot be said of the dominant class,” said the American embassy, echoing the concerns of supporters of transparency and responsibility.

Among the projects highlighted in the report there was the approval by the government of the state of Oyo of N63.4 billion for the renewal of his government home, described by the administration of the governor Seyi Makinde as “an embarrassment”.

In the State of Gombe, the Governor Inuwa Yahaya has allocated to 14.9 billion in n14.9 billion for a new ultra-modern residence and a further N14.23 billion of n14.23 billion for a new complex room of complex assembly-this tires has been classified among the poorest states of Nigeria.

The American Embassy described this expense as “a clear demonstration of fiscal irresponsibility”, adding that “this alleged lack of tax responsibility feeds inequality and erodes public trust”.

The criticism of the embassy arrives while the Nigerians continue to endure the chain effects of economic reforms, including the removal of subsidies for the fuel and the Naira float, which led to increase inflation, leaks of jobs and a strong increase in the cost of living.

The defense groups mentioned in the report also requested an urgent revaluation of the governance priorities at the subnational level, urging state governments to focus on policies focused on people instead of indulging in luxurious projects that offer little or no direct benefit to citizens.

The growing protests of reckless expenditure by the political leaders have once again attracted attention to the large gap between the government elite and the normal Nigerians, a gap that many fear widens only if the responsibility is not applied.
