The US bans sales of Kaspersky software citing security risks to Russia

The United States has banned the sale and use of Kaspersky software on its domains citing security risks from Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

On Thursday, US authorities declared that Kaspersky antivirus software would no longer be sold nationwide and asked users to move to alternative providers.

The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security announced that it had implemented a “first-of-its-kind” ban, claiming that Kaspersky’s base in Russia endangers consumer privacy and national security.

“Russia has demonstrated its capacity, and even more so, its intention to exploit Russian companies like Kaspersky to collect and use Americans’ personal information as a weapon.

”And that’s why we were forced to take the actions we took today,” US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said on a call with reporters.

According to Raimondo, Kaspersky will be banned from selling its software to American consumers and businesses starting July 20, after which the company will no longer be allowed to provide software updates to American customers.

“That means your software and services will degrade. “That’s why I strongly recommend that you immediately look for an alternative to Kaspersky,” said Raimondo.
