There is no crisis in APC, President Dep Sen does not agree with MPs dumping his party for ADC

Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau on Tuesday disagreed with Garba Maidoki, Senator representing Kebbi south, who cited internal crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC) as his reason for leaving the party.

Maidoki, has announced his defection from the APC to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal crisis and alleged injustice within the ruling party.

The letter announcing his defection was read in the senate chamber on Tuesday by Jibrin, who presided over the plenary session.

In a letter addressed to the Senate President and members of the upper house, Maidoki said his decision was based on developments within the APC.

“I am writing this letter to inform His Excellency, the President of the Senate, and my esteemed colleagues of my defection from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the African Democratic Congress, ADC,” the letter read.

“My decision is based on the prolonged internal crisis of the APC which makes my political inspiration a source of worry.”

The senator said he believes ADC offers a better platform to advance the interests of his senatorial district and the country.

“I believe the ADC idea is better in the interest of my senatorial district and Nigeria at large,” he said.

Maidoki also accused the APC of failing to live up to its principles, especially during the just ended primary elections in Kebbi state.

“The All Progressives Congress, APC, has not demonstrated the slogan of justice, peace and unity, especially in Kebbi State during the just concluded primaries,” he said.

“It is therefore in this regard that I wish to inform you of my defection to the African Democratic Congress, which I believe guarantees my political aspirations.”

Responding to the letter being read, Jibrin disagreed with Maidoki’s statement that the APC was facing an internal crisis.

The Deputy Chairman of the Senate stated that he was willing to intervene and reconcile senators with party stakeholders.

“But I beg to disagree with you here. There is no internal crisis in the APC,” Jibrin said.

“Let me request that you allow me to intervene to reconcile you and I know there is no problem, there is no internal problem in the APC in Kebbi state. It may be due to family disputes. If you allow me, I can come to reconcile you.”

The defection comes weeks after Maidoki resigned from APC membership ahead of the party’s senate primaries.

In a letter dated May 14 and addressed to APC ward chairman Rafin Zuru ward in Zuru LGA, the lawmaker attributed his resignation to a “protracted internal crisis” within the party.

Maidoki currently serves as chairman of the senate committee on legislative compliance and vice chairman of the national information and orientation committee.
