This week the Senate will fast-track the state police bill as an insecurity…

The Senate will begin consideration of a constitutional amendment to create the State Police across Nigeria when plenary resumes on Tuesday, Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, announced today.

The move is deliberate. The leaders of the National Assembly decided to “isolate the State Police measure from the broader constitutional review process” and carry it forward alone. Reason: “national need”.

Simply put: the current security crisis cannot wait for a complete revision of the Constitution.

“We stand with Nigerians on the state police issue,” Bamidele said in a statement from his directorate of media and public affairs. “All sections of the federation have made it clear that there cannot be a better time than now to establish a state police force.”

Announcement

—Who supports it?—

According to Bamidele, the alignment is rare but real this time: President Bola Tinubu, state governors, the National Assembly and security chiefs are all on board.

This consensus is what is forcing the fast track. The legislative week that begins Tuesday is now “critical,” with the State Police bill at the top of the Senate agenda.

—Why now—

Banditry, kidnapping and communal attacks have stretched Nigeria’s police force to a minimum. Governors have long argued that direct control of police is needed to respond more quickly. Critics worry that governors will misuse it.

But as attacks escalate every day, the “against” argument is losing ground. The Senate is betting that Nigerians want protection over politics right now.

If the amendment passes, it would be the largest restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture since 1999.

Tuesday’s debate starts the clock.
