Tinubu is on the committee that oversees the Network Management Company

President Bola Tinubu has formed an 11-member committee to oversee the operations of the newly approved Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO).

GAMCO is a Federal Government initiative designed to address the persistent electricity transmission challenges in Nigeria.

The inauguration, which was carried out on Friday by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, follows the Federal Executive Council’s approval of GAMCO earlier this week.

Gbajabiamila described the move as β€œone of the revolutionary steps taken by President Tinubu’s government in the very important power sector.

He emphasized that the work of this committee is important to Tinubu’s vision of optimizing electricity generation and transmission.

“The proposal to establish GAMCO is one of the revolutionary steps taken by the President and this government in the very important electricity sector. We are here to inaugurate the Committee on Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO), which basically aims to optimize and revolutionize electricity generation, and in particular, the electricity grid and transmission sector,” said the Chief of Staff.

The committee will review existing electricity laws, regulations and policies, while examining the implications of the Electricity Reform Act (2025) on asset ownership and management.

It will also assess the legal and financial framework surrounding the assets of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), which GAMCO plans to implement in a pilot phase.

Among its mandates, the committee will evaluate GAMCO’s proposed role in conjunction with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, determine fiscal and market implications, and recommend whether statutory amendments are necessary for the company’s operations to run effectively.

Chaired by Gbajabiamila, the committee includes the Attorney General of the Federation, the Ministers of Power, Works, Finance, Communications and Digital Economy, Science and Technology, Aviation and Petroleum (State), as well as the Chairman of the Nigerian Revenue Service and energy expert, Prof.

John Chidiebere Ezeamama, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Cabinet Affairs, will serve as secretary.

Gamecock, which will be wholly owned by the federal government through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, will begin operations with a pilot project along the Benin-Lagos transmission corridor. The initiative aims to recover at least 1,600 megawatts from NIPP’s Omotosho, Olorunsogo and Ihovbor power plants within 18 to 24 months, supported by the development of new high-capacity 330KV+ transmission lines.
