US President Donald Trump has issued a dramatic warning that “an entire civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not respect the American ultimatum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, increasing global tensions and putting the international community in difficulty.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump described the ongoing situation as potentially catastrophic, but also hinted at a possible turning point, saying that while he doesn’t want such devastation to occur, “maybe something revolutionary and wonderful can happen.”
He characterized the moment as one of the most important in modern history, underscoring the urgency surrounding the looming deadline.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways, and its closure continues to send shockwaves through global energy markets and international diplomacy.
The US president has given Tehran until 8pm EDT Tuesday (0000 GMT Wednesday) to reopen the critical maritime corridor, through which a significant portion of global oil shipments passes.
Trump also suggested that changing dynamics within Iran’s leadership could pave the way for change, referring to what he described as the possibility of “smarter, less radicalized minds” emerging. He also expressed support for the Iranian people, saying decades of hardship could end if a solution was reached.
Meanwhile, military pressure intensified. Reports indicate that US forces have carried out new strikes on targets located on Kharg Island, a key hub for Iranian oil exports. The attacks are seen as part of a broader strategy aimed at enforcing compliance while weakening critical infrastructure linked to Tehran’s economic and military capabilities.
For its part, state media said, Iran rejected a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal, instead presenting its own terms focused on achieving a permanent end to hostilities rather than a temporary truce. This highlights Tehran’s insistence on a more comprehensive solution as tensions continue to rise.
The humanitarian impact of the conflict has also raised concern, with independent human rights groups reporting thousands of casualties, including civilians, since hostilities escalated. The data, while difficult to independently verify in real time, highlights the growing urgency for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement.
