TUC threatens the strike at national level for the proposal of 5%petrol tax, puts members, CSOs, market associations in alert

The Nigeria Union congress has warned against a national strike if the federal government proceeds with its plan to impose a 5 % tax on oil products.

The President of the TUC, the partner Festus Osfo and the secretary general, his partner Nuhu Toro, on Monday, described the proposal as “Economic Evilness” that would have worsened the suffering of Nigerians already overloaded.

He argued that citizens and businesses were still recovering from the impact of the removal of the subsidies, from the increase in fuel prices, from food inflation and the demort of the Naira, insisting on the fact that another withdrawal would have “put a strain on companies, paralyze companies and push millions more deep into poverty”.

“The government cannot continue to use Nigerians as sacrificial lambs for its economic experiments. Instead of offering relief, jobs and solutions, she has chosen to further dry the citizens. This is unacceptable”, reads the note.

The Congress asked that the government immediately abandoned the plan, warning that the failure to do it would leave the work organized without another choice than to mobilize the workers and the citizens for a mass action.

“The strike action is firmly on the table if the government dares to ignore this warning,” said the TUC.

He added that all his state councils, affiliates and structures at national level had been put in red alert.

The Union also asked for solidarity by groups of civil society, unions, market associations, professional bodies and faith -based organizations, underlining that resisting politics must be a collective effort.

“Together, we must resist the policies that try to further impover the citizens and mortgage our future. Enough is enough. The Nigerians deserve economic justice, not an infinite punishment,” he added.
