WhatsApp announced on Saturday his intention to quickly seek execution delays and appealed the decision of the Nigerian competition and the Consumer Protection Court, which strengthened the $ 220 million fine imposed by the Federal Competition and the Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
In a statement issued in Lagos and shared with the Nigerian news agency, the message delivery platform voiced a strong disagreement with a court decision, describing it based on inaccuracies and errors in presenting their operations.
The court’s decision, submitted on Friday, not only confirmed a substantial fine but also ordered WhatsApp and its parent company, Meta Platforms Incorporated, to pay an additional $ 35,000 to cover the FCCPC investigation costs.
The fine comes from the accusation that WhatsApp and Meta are involved in discriminatory data practices that have a negative impact on Nigerian users. While WhatsApp and Meta previously appealed to the penalty, the court rejected their objections.
In his response, WhatsApp stated, “We immediately apply to keep ordering and appealing on today’s decision to avoid impacts on users.”
The company maintains its data practice, maintaining that its operations are basically dependent on limited user data to ensure the delivery of users of services and safety. “It is impossible to provide WhatsApp in Nigeria, or anywhere globally, without the infrastructure of our parent company, Meta,” the statement said.
WhatsApp further criticized the court’s conclusion, on the grounds that the FCCPC command contained “many inaccuracies” and misinterpreted how the platform operated.
The latest developments set a stage for a significant legal contest, when WhatsApp moves to protect its services in Nigeria, one of its main markets in Africa, where the digital communication platform plays an important role in social and economic interactions.
