Ronwen Williams, the starting goalkeeper and captain of South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, has appealed to other African countries to put aside their grudges and support his country in the ongoing FIFA World Cup competition.
Williams made the appeal in light of how other African countries supported South African opponents in the competition in their first match, due to xenophobic attacks on other African nationals living in South Africa.
Williams made his plea in a video, “I have been targeted over the last few days for things I did not say. I said nothing about Africa and people who support Mexico.
“I remember, I always said that, as Africans, we are one, we support each other. I don’t know where that comes from, and it hurts. I have mentioned, I have been attacked, of course, my country too, because of the things that happened in my country.
“Let’s just enjoy it, let’s have fun, and let’s leave politics to the politicians, you know, let’s play football, have fun and criticize what’s happening on the pitch.”
