OWERRI – It was an impressive turnout on Saturday 10 May 2025, while hundreds of young people throughout the state of IMO gathered for the inaugural edition of the Youths soul for the peace and safety of the afternoon marathon, organized by the government of the IMO State through the Ministry of Youth and Hunt of the talents.
The athletes representing the 27 areas of the local government of the State converged at the starting point, the Okigwe Round, after having subjected the accreditation and medical screening to ensure suitability and safety. Those with any form of disability have been exempt from participation in the physically demanding event.
The governor hopes that Uzodinma officially reported the race, praising the patience and enthusiasm of the participants. In his opening observations, the governor underlined the importance of physical suitability among young people, not only to promote peace and security, but also to allow them to face the challenges of life in good health.
To demonstrate solidarity, the Governor Uzodinma and his entourage joined the race for a short symbolic jogging from Okigwe Roundabout long Wetheral Road before returning.
Once marked, the main event began seriously. The male and female athletes, all in official sportswear and identification numbers assigned, have taken off from the Okigwe Round under close safety. The staff of the Nigeria, Frsc and medical teams were stationed along the way to ensure the safety and rapid response to emergencies.
The mapped route brought the runners through Wetheral Road, Akachi Road and on the Road Road in New Owerri, with the finish line at the iconic Heroes Square.
Despite the good mood, some athletes have not been able to complete the race and were assisted by medical teams and ambulances because of the effort.
Clinton Amara emerged winner in the male category, while Afghabo Esther claimed first place in the female category. Both samples received cash prizes of ₦ 500,000 each.
The consolation prizes were also awarded to the participants who were affected from 2nd to 20th position in both categories, celebrating a day of youth, fitness and community spirit.
