Eleven pupils of Almajiri on Monday lost their lives after a pile of sand collapsed in the village of Yardoka, in the area of the local government of Kubau in the state of Kaduna.
According to reports, the victims of the pupils were digging sand to help their Koranic teacher in modeling blocks for a mud home when the accident occurred around 13:45.
The deceased, aged between 10 and 15 years, have been identified as Muntari Abdulkadir, Aliyu Abba, Ali Umar, Mubarak Haruna, Usain Isa, Yusuf Shafiu, Mujitafa Jibril, Yusha’u Saidu Saidu, Aliyu Abdu, Hamisu Mohammed and Ali Abdulmomi. They came from Yardoka and nearby villages in the Damau district.

Seven other Dini-Umar Dini, Jibir Surajo, Usman Abdulmomini, Sagir Hussini, Naziru Abdullahi, Aminu Alkasim and Kabiru Lawal did not save with various degrees of injuries and brought to the primary health center in Yardoka, where they are currently receiving a treatment.
A head of the village, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the details of the accident, saying “Yes, it happened on Monday afternoon. Eleven children died and six others were brought to the hospital with injuries.
“Nine of the deceased did not come from Yardoka but they were Almajirai who had come with their teacher to study. They were not doing blocks for sale; the area is commonly used by the inhabitants of the village to dig in sand when they build or renewed houses,” he said.
Another resident, simply identified as Usman, described the accident as a devastating.
The Kaduna State Police Command also confirmed the accident.
The head of police public relations, DSP Mansir Hassan, said that the agents were lined up on the scene immediately after receiving a rescue call.
He added that a complete investigation has been started to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
