The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded to remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding the 2027 governorship succession of the state.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, the party’s state president, Chukwudi Dimkpa, said the choice of a governor was ultimately up to the electorate, describing the process as determined through democratic participation.

Dimkpa noted that the ADC is positioning itself as a platform focused on transparency, internal democracy and broad participation.

He said the party is committed to building an inclusive political movement that reflects the interests of Rivers residents.

Regarding zoning, the ADC president recognized its role in promoting balance and inclusion in the state, particularly among riverine and mountain communities.

He, however, stressed the importance of combining fairness and competence, adding that the party will adopt a consultative approach in choosing its candidate.

Dimkpa said: “The objective is to present a candidate with the ability to govern effectively and ensure wide acceptance across the State.”

He added that the party, at an appropriate time, will take decisions aimed at promoting unity and strengthening democratic processes.

The party argued that issues such as governance, security and economic development remain key priorities for residents, stressing that the leadership selection should reflect these concerns as the 2027 elections approach.
