Olympics: FIFA sanctions Canada for spying on opponents with drones

World soccer governing body FIFA has banned the Canadian Women’s coach and stripped the team of six points after they spied on opponents with drones at the Olympics.

A drone was used to spy on an opponent’s training session by the team, and FIFA announced the sanctions on Saturday which include a fine of Β£175,720 for the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA).

CSA officials Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander have also been suspended by FIFA for one year.

Soccer’s governing body FIFA said the Canadian team’s use of drones was a “breach” of its principles.

β€œThe officials were found responsible for offensive behaviour and violation of the principles of fair play in relation to the use of a drone by the CSA Women’s representative team within the scope of the Olympic football tournament,” FIFA said in a statement.

Canada beat New Zealand in their opening game to earn three points but FIFA sanctions leave them minus three points in Group A, with games against the hosts and Colombia to come.

CSA can appeal against the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Meanwhile, some reports say Canada may have used drones at the last Olympics in Tokyo, and if found guilty, could be stripped of their gold medal.
