Kenyan cleric warns Nigerian youth against violent protests

As Nigerian youth prepare to take to the streets tomorrow, activist cleric Bishop Wycliffe Khaemba has warned them against resorting to violent protests, citing the devastating consequences of similar actions in Kenya.

Bishop Khaemba, who has spent 28 years in activism, urged Nigerian youth to learn from the experience of Kenya, where massive protests against tax hikes have resulted in widespread damage to public infrastructure, loss of livelihoods and disruption to education.

“We allowed ourselves to be drawn into violent protests and riots, thinking that it would produce the desired results. Unfortunately, it produced the undesired results,” Bishop Khaemba said in a statement on Tuesday.
