A businessman was killed by bullets allegedly fired by police officers during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in Yauri local government area of ββKebbi State on Thursday.
An eyewitness, Malam Umar Bako Yelwa, told reporters that bullets fired by police near the Yauri River hit the victim at his plastic shop in the area.
He said the protests escalated when demonstrators blocked a federal highway and disrupted traffic to the town of Yauri.
Officers who were trying to disperse the protesters allegedly fired shots and one stray bullet hit an unknown plastic seller in his shop, killing him.
The situation in Yauri remains tense.
Attempts to contact the state police spokesman, Nafiu Abubakar, to confirm the incident were unsuccessful as phone calls and text messages to him went unanswered.
Meanwhile, the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, remained calm despite widespread protests in some parts of the city.
