Eguavoen rules himself out of the job with the Super Eagles and chooses a date to announce a new coach

Austine Eguavoen has ruled himself out as a possible candidate to become the next coach of the Nigerian national team, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The Super Eagles have been without a substantial coach since the departure of Finidi George as coach six weeks ago following a poor showing in the World Cup qualifiers where the Super Eagles drew 1-1 against South Africa in Uyo before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic in their adopted home ground in Ivory Coast.

In a statement released, the NFF said they are looking for an expatriate coach to take over as head coach due to the team’s precarious position in the World Cup qualifying group and the start of the 2025 AFCON, however, nothing has really happened since that announcement.

Hervé Renard, who was the anointed choice to take over as coach, turned down the job leaving the duo of Eric Chelle and Tom Saintfeit as the leading candidates for the position, but recent reports suggest that there is a chance that neither of the aforementioned duo will get the job.

Speaking on the situation and with the start of AFCON qualifiers in just over three weeks, Eguavoen, considered one of the team’s possible interim coaches, ruled himself out of the job but said a new coach will be introduced next weekend if all goes according to plan.

The NFF technical director made this known to journalists shortly after a meeting of the technical committee, which was to deliberate on the urgent issue of a new coach for the Super Eagles ahead of matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively.
