EDO: Court of Appeal confirms Ighodalo as PDP gubernatorial candidate

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, on Monday overturned the judgment of the Federal High Court that nullified the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Edo State.

Justice Inyang Ekwo on July 4 annulled the results of the February 22 election that produced Asue Ighodalo as the PDP governorship candidate in Edo on the grounds that 381 ad-hoc delegates expected to contest the election were unlawfully excluded by the party.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, the party appealed to the court to overturn it.

In Monday’s hearing,
a three-member panel of the appeals court overturned the ruling.

The panel ruled that the lower court did not have jurisdiction to hear the lawsuit filed by the aggrieved delegate.

He added that the plaintiffs did not have the necessary legal standing.

The court ruled that a lower court could not interfere with the PDP’s candidate selection process for the Edo state governorship election, effectively upholding the party’s right to name its own candidate.
