Tragic loss: Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns rising star Jayden Adams dies aged 25

South African football is in mourning after the sudden death of Jayden Adamsthe talented midfielder Sunset in Mamelodi and Bafana Bafanawho passed away at the age of 25 on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

The news has shocked the football community, coming just weeks after Adams represented his country in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America, where Bafana Bafana made history by reaching the round of 32 for the first time.

The cause of death has not been publicly revealed.

Family representatives and officials have asked for privacy as they mourn the loss of the young star, who died at her home in the Cape Town area.

Born on 5 May 2001 in Cape Town, Jayden Oswin Adams rose through the ranks of Stellenbosch FC and became the first graduate of the club’s academy to sign a professional contract in 2020.

He made his senior debut shortly after and racked up over 100 appearances for the club, scoring key goals and providing assists that helped Stellenbosch secure the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup title.

In January 2025, Adams transferred to powerful club Mamelodi Sundowns, where he quickly established himself as a key midfielder.

He contributed to Sundowns’ successful campaigns, including winning the 2024/25 South African Premiership title and, most importantly, the 2025-26 CAF Champions League.

Adams played a vital role in the continental triumph and dedicated his winner’s medal to a deceased former teammate.

At international level, Adams earned nine caps for South Africa and made his debut in 2022.

He was part of the team that finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and scored two goals in World Cup qualifying.

In the 2026 World Cup, he started against Mexico and Czechia (the latter just a day after the heartbreaking loss of his grandmother, Marianna Adams) and came off the bench in the historic victory over South Korea that propelled Bafana to the round of 16.

His composure, vision and work rate in midfield earned him praise as a player of immense potential and character.

Mamelodi Sundowns expressed its deep regrets on behalf of the club.

“Jayden was more than a player; he was family. His dedication, humility and talent lit up the field and inspired everyone around him. We are devastated.” reads a statement from the club.

The South African Footballers’ Union (SAFPU) He issued an emotional tribute:

“The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams. Jayden had recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, his teammates, his clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large.”

South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, highlighted Adams’ professionalism: “That he has chosen to wear the national shirt and give it his all… speaks to a depth of character and professionalism far beyond his years, and reflects the caliber of young man South Africa has lost.”

FC Stellenboschhis boyhood club, also paid his respects and remembered the academy product who made the Western Cape proud.

Fans, teammates and football legends from across Africa have flooded social media with condolences, using hashtags such as #RIPJaydenAdams and #BafanaBafana to celebrate his legacy. Many remember his resilience in playing despite personal pain during the World Cup.

Adams leaves a legacy of resilience, talent and national pride.

Although his life was tragically short, his contributions to South African football – from national triumphs to historic World Cup moments – will not be forgotten.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon, with the football world coming together to remember a star who was taken too soon.
