Sunderland’s bid for Orban award fails on deadline day

On transfer deadline day, Sunderland made an ambitious move to sign striker Gift Orban but were unable to complete the deal.

The club, which struggles to score goals, had identified Orban as a possible solution to its attacking problems but were unable to reach an agreement with his current club Lyon.

Orban, 22, has scored three goals in 16 appearances this season, including a recent brace against Strasbourg.

Despite his potential, the forward has seen limited playing time, clocking up just 593 minutes on the pitch as he faced stiff competition for a place in Lyon’s starting lineup.

Lyon have recently strengthened their attacking options with the acquisition of Georges Mikautadze from Metz, further diminishing Orban’s chances of getting regular playing time at the club.

Sunderland had been keen to sign Orban on loan but their bid was rejected.

Interest in Orban was not limited to Sunderland. Premier League side Burnley and Southampton were also interested in the striker’s availability.

Gift Orban, who previously played for Stabaek and Gent, joined Lyon in January for a reported fee of €14m.
