Nigeria senior national team interim coach Austine Eguavoen has fine-tuned tactics and formation ahead of the team’s AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic in Uyo, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen will begin his fourth stint as coach of the team on Saturday with the aim of ending the team’s poor run of one win in four games, including two losses and one draw, a streak that led to the departure of Finidi George as coach three months ago.

Ahead of the match, we have learned exclusively that the coach has decided to play with a 4-3-3 system, a change from the 4-4-2 played by previous coach Finidi in the only defeat Nigeria has suffered against its neighbours in the history of senior international football.

His plans so far have seen him use holding midfielder Wilfred Ndidi in an advanced role in training, similar to the way he currently plays for Premier League side Leicester City, a role he made his own in their successful promotion campaign from the Championship following relegation.

The idea is said to have come about after a chat with Ndidi, where he confirmed to the coach that he feels more comfortable in an advanced role, although he is open to playing in any role that the coach feels can be of help to the team.
