The Federal Government has decided to split the 115 Federal Unity Colleges in the country into primary and secondary schools.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, disclosed this at the opening of the Unity Colleges Principals Annual General Meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
Sununu said the plan to expand the unitary universities was in line with the National Education Policy (NPE).
The minister added that the separation of unitary universities would, among other things, attract more funds to improve infrastructure, meet teacher welfare and create job opportunities.
He said: “I would like to emphasize the importance of cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit in our young generation, a spirit that will propel them towards independence and make a meaningful contribution to the development of our nation.
“Unemployment remains a pressing issue, and it is our collective responsibility to equip our students with the skills and mindset needed to achieve success.
“Entrepreneurship education offers a solution to this challenge because it prepares students to think creatively and innovatively, and develops the confidence to take calculated risks.
Sununu called for collaboration among school principals as important stakeholders to improve the state of education in the country.
He urged the principals to curb social vices, inculcate a culture of care in students and work with the host community for the overall safety and growth of the colleges.
