Notorious bandit, Bello Turji, and others are still on the loose two weeks after CDS Musa vowed to arrest him

It has been two weeks since the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), General Chris Musa vowed to arrest notorious bandit kingpin, Bello Turji, but the insurgents are still on the run, causing mayhem, kidnapping innocent Nigerians and collecting millions of naira as ransom.

Turji even went so far as to play Robin Hood, handing out huge sums of money as gifts and releasing a TikTok video in which he was seen mocking Nigeria’s security agencies.

“It’s just a matter of time, we will get it, and I can assure you that it will be done in the shortest possible time,” CDS assured.

Meanwhile, the military continued to carry out intensive attacks against other bandit kingpins and was relatively successful in eradicating some of them.

In the last two months, no less than 30 such bandits have been sent to the outside world in various attacks in the North West, especially in Zamfara and Sokoto states.

However, while Nigerians wait for Musa to fulfill his promise to hunt down the bandit leader, attacks by other bandits and insurgents have not stopped.

There were a number of attacks in September, the same month that the CDS vowed to arrest Turji and end his reign of terror.

Below is an overview of some of the attacks reported since General Musa vowed to end insecurity.

On September 11, a day after the CDS pledged to arrest Turji, suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a daring attack on Bassa town in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to local residents, the attack began at around 5:30 a.m., with residents reporting sporadic gunshots echoing throughout the town and when it was over, several villagers had been killed.

It was also reported that several soldiers, including a high-ranking captain, were killed.

On September 12, three soldiers and four policemen were ambushed and killed by bandits in Zamfara State.

State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Dalijan who confirmed the attack, said that the bandits planned to attack a construction company working along the highway but deployed combined security forces from the police and Army to the scene.

On September 13, some bandits reportedly attacked Bassa-Kukoki village, Allawa District in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State where many innocent villagers were killed.

On September 15, it was the turn of the Daffo community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State to be attacked by militias where seven people were massacred including a pastor, his wife and two sons who were killed inside their home.

On September 24, gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked two Zamfara communities in which eight people were reportedly killed and more than 60 others kidnapped.

On the same date, another group of armed men attempted to attack a forward military base in Magami community in Zamfara, but were repulsed by soldiers although they managed to kill four residents.

A community leader, Shuaibu Haruna, who spoke to journalists about the attack, said that the bandits rode many motorbikes with guns and other weapons and shot sporadically.

On Friday, September 27, the Fulbe Cultural and Development Organization (FUDECO) in Taraba State filed a petition over a series of killings and attacks on Karim-Lamido local government council in the state committed by Gomu militia, herdsmen and bandits.

The group’s head, Hajiya Aishatu Ardo, who made the allegations at a press conference in Jalingo, said the escalation of violence between the Gomu militia and the local herding community in the council had become worrying.

He noted that in less than two weeks, many people had been killed and kidnapped while hundreds of cows, goats and sheep had been stolen by the militia during the attacks. Show truncated content
