Suspected cholera killed 11 people in Benue community

At least 11 people have been confirmed dead in a suspected cholera outbreak in Apaogbozu community, Ado local government area of ​​Benue State.

Former secretary of Ado LGA, Dr. Perpetual Okafor, confirmed the news to journalists on Tuesday.

He said six other people were in critical condition in hospitals in the area.

Okafor said: “On the first day of the cholera outbreak, three deaths were recorded. Yesterday (Monday), around four people also died and today, tonight, we lost four more people.

“As I speak to you, six other people who went to church yesterday were caught in the net.

“I call on the Benue State government and other community spirited individuals to come to our aid so that our community is not completely wiped out by this terrible disease.”

The state’s Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Dr. Yanmar Ortese, also confirmed the incident.

However, he was silent about the number of victims.

“The Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly drew my attention today, around noon when there was a cholera outbreak in one of the Apaogbozu communities.

“I called the emergency operations center at the ministry to verify whether the claims were true and they told me that there was one suspected case.

“From his statement, the person had diarrhea and was also vomiting. They will move quickly and take samples to find out whether it is cholera or not,” said the commissioner.
