The groups of women reject the lack of respect for nwebonyi against Ezekwesili, ask for apologies – Blueprint Newspapers Limited

A coalition of over 350 groups of women condemned the behavior of Senator Peter Onyekachi NweBonyi during a Senate commission for ethical hearing and privileges on March 25, 2025.

They asked for formal apologies both from the NweBonyi senator and the Senate Committee for the lack of respect shown to Dr. Object, Ezekwesili, a renowned garment and supporter of women’s rights.

The coalition expressed indignation for what they called “shameful conduct” by the senator, who support have used highly offensive and vulgar language against Dr. Ezekwesili during the hearing.

According to the declaration, instead of engaging in serious discussions on critical issues of justice and governance, Senator NweBonyi rejected the signatories, deriding their efforts as “innerous” and “a waste of time”.

The coalition stressed that the behavior of Senator NWebonyi was not only a difference in opinion, but an attempt calculated to silence and discredit women who support justice.

“This conduct is completely unacceptable and must not be addressed,” read the declaration.

“The actions of Senator NWebonyi reflect an alarming contempt for the values ​​of equity, dignity and respect, in particular towards women in political and public discourse,” he added.

The declaration observed that Dr. EzekWesili, former Minister of Education and current President of Women Political Leaders (WPL), has been a long champion for women’s rights to be listened to and respected in all spaces, in particular in politics.

The coalition clarified that the attack was an attack on all the women who were marginalized in the political arena.

The groups also criticized the inability of the members of the Senate Committee to intervene and make Senator NWebonyi responsible during the procedure.

They accused the Committee of traveling his behavior and perpetuating a culture that undermines the voices of women in politics.

In their declaration, the women’s groups asked Senator NweBonyi to issue immediate and unequivocal apologies to Dr. Ezekwesili and the women of Nigeria, whose voices continue to be systematically ignored and chopped in the political spaces.

The coalition also invited the Senate Committee to take responsibility for his inability to call the senator to order and urged the Senate to undertake rapid action in considering him responsible.

“We will not allow this assault on our dignity to stand. We are united in our struggle for justice, equality and responsibility. This injustice will not be supported.”
