Senator S’east urged Tinubu to respect the late NEC chairman, Nwosu, despite the Senate of Rejection

The Southeast Senator has asked the Tinubu Ball President to capture the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, a former Chairman of the National Election Commission who has no existing (NEC), for his very important role in organizing historic general elections on June 12, 1993, the presidential election, is widely considered as the most just election in Nigeria.

The appeal came after the senate rejected a motion sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) so that Nwosu was officially recognized for his contribution to Nigerian democracy.

Apart from that setback, Abaribe urged Tinubu, who he described as “soldier June 12,” to see beyond the decision of the senate and take action.

“So we use this opportunity to ask the Government of the President of the Tinubu Bola to respect people who ensure that the election was held, even though it was canceled, and placed the election in the awareness of the Nigerians,” said Abaribe.

He noted that Nwosu could not announce the results of the final election due to a court order by judge Bassey IKPEME, who stopped the process.

“If you remember, Tinubu is seen and always seen as a June 12 soldier. Don’t forget that it is the result of the cancellation of elections that caused riots nationally, eventually forcing the military to get out of power in 1999.”

Abaribe also referred a statement made by the former Chair of Inec, Professor Attahiru Jega, in a new Kolokium to respect Nwosu.

“Prof. Jega said he was surprised that until now, the professor had not been recognized or respected by the Nigerian government, who today benefited from his inheritance in producing, in 1993, the most free and fairest election.”

Senator Ocita Izunaso (IMO West), another Southeast MPs, echoed Abaribe’s sentiment, told of his personal experience as an officer who returned during the 1993 election. He detailed how Nwosu risked his safety by standing on the military junta.

“We all realize that judge Bassey Ikpeme said that there should be no election. At 9:30 in the morning on June 10, Nwosu went to the National Defense and Security Council for his own volition and convinced them that the election process had begun,” Izunaso said.

He also denied the claim that Nwosu failed to announce the results.

“If someone says that he did not announce the results, the person lied, because the results were announced. In fact, 29 countries were declared, leaving only the state of Taraba. Even when he was called to Aso Rock, he was arrested, but he still ordered the announcement of the results of Taraba.”

“So at what point Humphrey Nwosu has announced the results? In Aso Rock? Let’s be serious. Actually, the Senate Resolution is not even binding. We urged President Tinubu to do the right thing and capture Professor Nwosu.”

On Thursday, Mosis Abaribe tried to change the name of the Central Office of the Independent National Election Commission (Inec) after Nwosu and gave him the National Award. However, the proposal triggered an intense debate, with the senators very divided into Nwosu’s legacy.

In the end, the motion was carried out for voting and rejected.

Senate instead agreed to observe the silence of one minute to respect Nwosu and give condolences to his family, but reject calls for further recognition.

In protest, the southeast senators strike, expressing their dissatisfaction with the decision.
