Edo Mob Killing: North Elder gave an ultimatum 14-day state government, demands for problems

Northern’s peak socio-political group, the North Elder Forum (NEF), has reacted to the terrible murder of 16 northern hunters by a mob in Uromi, Edo’s state, after they were mistaken for the kidnapper on Friday.

NEF, in a statement that was very words released on Saturday, revealed anger over the killing of the hunters, said that the North had tolerated the attacks on the people in some parts of the country and would no longer forgive such attacks.

In a statement issued by NEF spokesman, Professor Abubakar if Jiddere, the group gave the Edo state and the Federal Ultimatum government 14 days to compensate to the families of the victims or face the consequences of mass actions, as well as issuing public apologies and an attempt that the barbaric action would not occur again.

Describing the incident as “surprising, sad, and very disturbing,” NEF also demanded the arrest and trial of those who were responsible for the killing of the northern travelers who had to be done publicly to ensure transparency and accountability.

NEF’s statement is read in part:

“NEF received surprising, sad, and very disturbing news about the savage, extra-judicial, and cowardly about the innocent northern hunters who returned home to celebrate the end of the Ramadan Festival and Eid al-Fitr Sallah with their families in Uromi, Edo State.

“This heinous act is completely unacceptable, and we condemn it in the strongest terms.

“Over the years, the North has experienced many acts of violence from several southern regions in the past, but such incidents must end.

“NEF demands immediate action, including the arrest and trial of all individuals responsible for the attacks and brutal murder of innocent travelers.

“The call for public prosecution to the perpetrators and those who help crime to ensure full transparency and accountability.

“In addition, the forum demands compensation payments to the families of the victims, in line with the standards determined by their respective religions.

“NEF also demands an indisputable apology from the people and the Edo state government to the north for this heinous attack on its people. The punishment of the perpetrators must be witnessed by the public to serve as a prevention of acts of violence in the future.

“NEF gives the government of the state of Edo and the Federal Ultimatum government 14 days to meet the demands.

“The failure to do so will force North to take all the actions needed to seek justice for its people and the north,” the statement warned.
