In his third speech at the General Debate, Milei said he would speak in a “constructive spirit” on three issues: what organizations should do and fail to do, what they should not do but do anyway, and the organization’s position on artificial intelligence (AI).
He said the UN had become “a useless organization whose sole purpose is to maintain a caste of arrogant parasites masquerading as well-meaning bureaucrats”, and accused the UN of allowing chaos, violence and terrorism to flourish, protecting dictatorships, while member states systematically vote against Israel.
‘Lack of consequences’
Turning to the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), which he called a “national struggle”, the President said the UN had taken another path while unilateral changes continued despite resolution 31/49adopted 50 years ago.
“There are no words or resolutions that are lacking. What is lacking are the consequences,” he said.
Milei said the Sea Lion project was moving towards oil extraction on Argentina’s continental shelf under a British permit that was “rejected by Argentina as illegal and invalid.”
He reiterated Buenos Aires’ stance that self-determination “does not apply in this case, because the population is invested by the occupying power in a territory whose sovereignty is being disputed.”
Argentina has lodged a protest, sanctioned companies involved in oil extraction on the disputed continental shelf and sent a sovereignty defense bill to Congress, he said, again calling on Britain to resume negotiations.
‘Anarchy and tyranny’
Milei said the UN had built “a giant bureaucracy” to decide how citizens should live, and highlighted the pandemic, calling the forced lockdown “a global experiment in social control disguised as science” – which is why, he said, Argentina had left the World Health Organization (WHO).
Argentina has embraced free enterprise capitalism, is rebuilding its military and is “firmly aligned” with the West, the United States and Israel, he said, condemning Iran’s attack on Israel.
Avoid ‘pre-emptive’ AI regulations
On AI, he said every technological revolution has created fears of jobs that never materialize and that Argentina would “stand at the forefront of freedom” with a “commitment not to pre-emptively regulate”, limited liability for companies operating with AI agents and tax incentives.
Argentina will continue to take part in multilateral forums in good faith, he said, “but we must not confuse cooperation with subordination.”
“No country is guaranteed a place in history,” he said. “We believe Argentina still has a great future. And we decided to take over and claim it.”
