Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, continued their impressive run at the 2026 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso U17 on Monday at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.
In a very close first half, both teams failed to break the deadlock despite creating promising openings. The Flamingos, runners-up in the inaugural edition of the tournament staged in Ghana two years ago, dominated possession and pressed high but failed to convert their chances as the Burkinabe defense remained resolute.
The half ended goalless with Nigeria pushing for the first goal but meeting stiff resistance. The second half saw Nigeria increase the intensity in search of a breakthrough. Introducing a new attacking impetus and sustained pressure in the final third eventually paid off, as the Flamingos kept Burkina Faso pinned in their own half and forced several set-piece opportunities.
The deadlock was finally resolved in the 82nd minute when Mary Dunstan found the back of the net with a well-taken finish. The goal sparked celebrations on the Nigerian bench and shifted the momentum decisively in favor of the Flamingos. Nigeria doubled their lead in injury time when Oluwakemi Adegbuyi scored in added time in the second period to seal the victory and put the result beyond doubt.
His late goal secured the Flamingos maximum points and underlined their attacking depth at crucial moments of the match. With the 2-0 win, the Flamingos remain top of the table with a perfect nine points from three matches, continuing their unbeaten run in the competition.
The result further strengthens their position as trophy favourites, as they now turn their attention to their next match with confidence and momentum.
